Blue Highway Question & Answer!

How do you think Miz Alice will have an impact on Least Heat-Moon? Give Examples.

Miz Alice is an older, educated lady who gives a tour of her island to Heat- Moon. As she tells the history of the island, Heat-Moon learns also about Miz Alice’s culture, personal story, and beginnings on the island. I believe that Miz Alice will impact Least Heat-Moon to live his life according to what he chooses and to not conform. The island is very dirty, “small, marshy” which has “no mayer, no jail, no local taxes, no water bill.” I think this shows that everyone on the island lives their own life and takes care of just themselves. Miz Alice states that the hardest thing about living on the island is “Having the gumption to live different and the sense to let everybody else life different.” (397) I think that this quote will always stay with Heat-Moon for the rest of his journey and I think that he will teach it to others as well.

I also think that Miz Alice will have an impact on the way Heat-Moon goes through the rest of his journey. He will have her quote, “Having the gumption to live different and the sense to let everybody else life different” on his mind throughout the rest of his journey. I think that this is a very srtong quote and it was a great way for them to end their conversation. This quote is not only true for this situation, people should not conform to the beleifs of others, they should form their own beleifs. Miz Alice may have made Heat-Moon realize how out of touch he is with his surroundings; which will make him more appreciatve of them throughout the rest of his journey.

I agree with the last quote in Small Town Girl's opinion about the impacts on Heat-Moon's journey. "Having the gumption to live different and the sense to let everybody else live different." This impacted Heat-Moon because that is what he is doing right now, he is going on a journey, not having a job and no longer having a wife. This is something that a mid age man wouldn't necessarily do, it's not in the norm. Another quote I think that impacted Heat-Moon was then Miz Alice stated her views on education. Miz Alice states that it is more important to go out into the real world, learn how to deal with real world situations, than to memorize something out of a textbook. This is another example of how Heat-Moon is dealing with his problems back at home. He left his normal daily life, went on an adventure across the country to find who he was through other peoples influences.

In addition to what everyone else has said, Miz Alce expresses the importance in slowing down and appreciating nature. On her island, she is able to stay away from the obsession over material possessions and the stress caused by the business of a city lifestyle. Heat-Moon is able to watch her in this setting and see how important nature is to her, and I think he will learn from this.

"Having the gumption to live different and the sense to let everybody else live different." You all agree that this is an important idea that Heat-Moon will take away with him. It's not just about the hardest thing about living on a "small marshy island"; it's true everywhere isn't it? But so far at least, I don't see my students talking about how it might also pertain to our lives. Living different from what? What does it mean to you?

I think Miz Alice learns to live different from the social norm. She is already living differently from the rest of the world by being isolated on an island with no law. However, she appreciates the land and is thankful for everything in nature. I think that most people get too carried away with material things and do not appreciate the land and the beauty of life. I have learned from this reading to live life to the fullest and be more thankful for nature and our surrondings.
