Girls VS Boys! Who is to blame?

As a resident in McElvaney Hall and a member of the notorious second floor, we have many policies we are told to abide by. We are told to please clean up after yourself, respect other’s space, not to dead lock the doors open, and most importantly, not destroy McElvaney: our home for the next year. Although the majority of McElvaney follow these rules, there are always the few rebellious individuals. Over the fun filled weekend, vandalism occurred on the second floor- boy’s side. With all the commotion from “boulevarding” and the night game, no one saw who jumped up and knocked down some ceiling tiles. Who would commit such a scandalous crime? What is the point in knocking down tiles?

After recovering from the weekend, McElvaney residents received an email regarding the acts that had occurred. It states that although the action was on the boy’s side of the hall, the girl’s are also held responsible, and ALL (of the second floor) will be fined to replace the damage. Why should the girl’s also be held responsible?

I understand that since no one has come forth to admit to the crime, nor since anyone saw who committed the crime, everyone should be to blame; however, I strongly believe that since it was on the boy’s side and (in a girl’s opinion, only capable of being damaged by a boy), that only the boys are to be blamed! Who do you believe should be blamed? What would be your opinion if you were one of the innocent individuals who is having to pay for the crime?

I also live on the second floor of McElvaney and you bring up a great point! This is not the first time this has been an issue either. I feel as though this has become a weekly thing as well. Because the tiles were on the boys side and clearly were punched out of the ceilings by boys, the girls should not be required to pay. This also brings up the issue of gender stereotypes. Guys are seen as more aggressive than girls and thus would be more inclined to do such a thing as vandalize a building. Just last week this occured except on the girls side for a change. While I still stand by the fact taht no girl would do such a thing, should girls have to pay because it was on our side and we cannot prove who did it?

I live in Boaz and we have even more of a problem. Stuff gets broken, and you can't even blame it on one gender. Since the hall is mixed noone really takes the blame for anything. Fortunately they distribute the charges like communists and we all pay equal amounts so it doesn't turn out to be too much money, but I'm still not too happy about paying for something some drunk idiot did because he thought it was funny. and the worst, by the way, is when someone from another floor messes up your floor. Living on boaz 2nd floor, there are always people here and alot of the times its not even us that break the stuff. Us 2nd floor people are careful drunk idiots! Quit breaking our stuff!
